The Religious Society of Friends, also known as the Quakers, emerged during the religious warfare of seventeenth century England.  Early Friends organized around their experience of Jesus Christ as the Light and Power of God.  Friends emphasize that Jesus Christ is actively present within us and among us.  He leads and enables us to follow.  Through His Holy Spirit, we experience His presence, leading, and enabling without the use of professional clergy, human hierarchy, or outward ritual.  Friends believe we are led to worship by waiting in Christ’s Presence; to live simply as His Light in the world; and to respond to evil in His Light and Power rather than our own.
